Imagine my mood when we turned on the television to watch the season finale of Survivor only to find...The Simpsons? Yup. On every channel that promised me Survivor was Homer. We have low budget satellite service so don't get any US channels. The mystery was solved when a little ticker across the bottom of the screen told us that Survivor was delayed by 18 minutes due to football programming on the originating network. So Jack, Kathy, Selina and Jeff...while you were watching somebody beat somebody else at football, I had to watch the Simpsons for 18 minutes.
But enough about Pat. Day 37 begins with Fabio musing about the need to break up Holly, Chase and Sash (why they didn't do it by voting out Holly at Tribal Council remains a mystery to me). When Fabio approaches Holly about voting for Sash or Chase, she is non-commital. Sash eagerly tells Fabio whatever he wants to hear and Chase confirms that he wants to take Fabio to the final three.
The first immunity challenge involves finding a post with the correct answer to a trivia question about Nicaragua, then removing a bag from that post. If the answer is correct the bag contains puzzle pieces. After obtaining three such bags, the pieces can be put together to form the Survivor Nicaragua logo. Fabio needs to win this one, but is far behind in the collection of his puzzle pieces. However, while Sash struggles and Chase looks puzzled, Fabio throws his logo together and wins immunity.
Back at camp Fabio is ecstatic. He tells us that he always knew he would wait until the end of the game to begin playing aggressively. He talks to both Chase and Sash about getting Holly out. Dan also makes a pitch against Holly. But when the votes are tallied it is Dan who is heading to the showers. With Dan goes Pam from the pool. Now Fabio knows he has to win another challenge to stay in the game since Holly, Chase and Sash have remained firm.
The next day there is another Immunity Challenge. Survivors do the traditional walk down memory lane and burn wooden shields with the names of the Survivors who have not made it to this point. Then it's down to business. With one hand they must balance a sword. With the other they must continue to add coins to a pile balanced on the sword's handle. Fabio's pile of coins looks wobbly right from the beginning but, against all odds, he holds on to win another immunity challenge. Suddenly the tables have turned. Fabio will be going to the final three and the others have to scramble to ensure that Fabio takes them along. Sash tells us privately that he is as desperate as he has ever been in the game. He does some major sucking up to Fabio, telling him he is his best friend in the game. Fabio's response is a knowing smile (quite the change from the Fabio who believed everything everyone said at the beginning of the show). Fabio tells Chase that Sash was selling him out. Chase is PO'd and tells Fabio that had he not won immunity the alliance would have sent him packing. Holly confirms this when Fabio talks to her. Fabio confides that Holly is the only one of the three who has never lied to him and he believes that perhaps she deserves to go to the final. But, alas, at Tribal Council Holly is sent home taking Roberta, from our pool, with her.
We are now down to three. Fabio is in a position of power. Sash feels humbled because he was called out on all his lying and conniving at Tribal Council. Chase is still working the game, hoping that Fabio will get overconfident and blow it with the jury. The threesome awake on day 39 to a final day breakfast. They clean up the camp and burn the shelter then head off to meet the jury. All in all there is not a lot of drama from the jury. Even Jane doesn't go too far off the wall. They ask the usual questions. Fabio has one very emotional moment and then the votes are cast. Dimples then takes the urn containing the votes and (so they would have us believe) walks all the way from Nicaragua to New York where he arrives at the finale wearing the same shirt which must smell really really bad considering he has just walked all the way from Nicaragua. Dimples counts the votes and it is the airheaded Fabio who wins the million. While I am not sure I believe Fabio should have won, I am very happy that my good buddy Lynn, co-founder of the pool and sometime author of this update has won the $150.00.
No one picked Fabio to win the million. However two people picked Sash (Marie and Donna) and one person (me) picked Chase. I got Rick (who is busy making toffee and peanut brittle!!) to draw from among these three names. I am proud to announce that Donna is the winner of a genuine red Survivor Nicaragua buff.
The next season of Survivor begins on February 16. It promises a new twist. Anyone voted off goes to Redemption Island where they can win a chance to return. Should be interesting. Until February....

Survivor Nicaragua - December 15/10
Since your trusty scribe is a little under the weather I am going to make this short and sweet (did I just here a collective "thank God" from you guys?).
It's night 32 and Benry has joined the jury. Sash tells Fabio that Benry wanted him out and that Sash was protecting him. Before Fabio's head can explode in an effort to process this information, tree mail arrives. It promises full bellies and a trip to places they have never seen. There is also a 4G phone (I knew it...I just bought a flippin 3G phone and its obsolete!). On the phone are videos from loved ones. Tears are shed but we all know that this is just the start of the tear-fest. Just before the challenge, Fabio suggests that if three people go on the reward challenge it should be Fabio, Chase and Sash. There is somewhat reluctant agreement from the other two.
At the challenge, Dimples promises them a sail down the coast complete with sandwiches, cookies, chips, champagne and beer. Best of all their aforementioned loved ones are going to help them win the challenge. As the loved ones enter the challenge area there is a great outpouring of emotion, with Fabio being particularly emotional at the sight of his Mom. For the challenge, Survivors must run up a plank, dive into some water and retrieve 2 bags of letter tiles. The loved one must then assemble the tiles into a phrase. Chase's Mom is first to solve the puzzle (Family Comes First). Of course Chase gets to pick someone to go along. His first choice is Sash and his mom. The Dimples tells them that he can pick one more person. Poor Chase is not good at making decisions, but with much apologizing he chooses his old ally, Holly and her husband. I would be wrong to say that Fabio accepts this graciously. He sobs. He tells Chase that he would have taken him and that Chase knows how much Fabio's mom means to him. But the deal is done. Chase, Sash and Holly, along with their loved ones get on a sail boat for a trip down the coast. Over a meal they confirm that the three of them will go to the final and that Jane is too much of a risk to keep around. Fabio, Dan and Jane return to camp where Chase the good 'ole boy is now the arch villain. Fabio feels betrayed by Chase, Dan feels they have all just become expendable and Jane says that she realizes she is #4 in a four way alliance.
AS the threesome return to camp following their trip, Fabio is all over Chase about his choice. What he doesn't know is that Chase/Sash/Holly have decided he will be the next to go. At the immunity challenge (memorizing shapes while blindfolded and replicating the shape and the position on a shield) Fabio wins. Of course this puts a major wrench in the plans of the alliance. Sash and Fabio feel that Jane should go, and reluctantly Chase agrees. At this moment Jane walks up to the group. There is silence. Tension. Jane asks if it is her and they tell her it is. An angry Jane pours water on the fire before leaving for Tribal Council, saying that she started the fire and she will put it out.
At Tribal Council Dimples actually asks Jane, Dan and Fabio why they don't form their own alliance. Hmmmm, that's a good idea they say. But it seems such a hastily formed alliance has difficulty getting it right. When the votes are tabulated Jane is heading over to the jury and you can bet she won't be voting for Chase! With Jane goes Jack from the pool, who, I am sure is surprised he hung around this long. No one chose Jane to win the million.
Left in the pool are Cheryl (Sash), Roberta (Holly), Lynn (Fabio), Pam (Dan) and Selina (Chase). Only Marie and Donna (who voted for Sash), Roberta (who voted for Holly) and me (who voted for Chase) still have a chance at winning the red Survivor Nicaragua merged buff.
The season finale is on Sunday evening. Check for you local times and we will "see" you all after the episode.

Survivor Nicaragua - December 8/10
We rejoin our Survivors as they return to camp, ears ringing from Dimples' beratement of NaOnka and Kelly. Chase, Holly and Jane are as thick as watermelons at a Rider game. Dan, Fabio and Benry also have a tight alliance. Sash, having lost his alliance, is now the swing vote. Since everyone knows he has the idol, Sash tells the others he is going to play it at the next Tribal Council. "Get rid of it", says Sash, "and I'll remove the target from my back". Sash also has a private chat with Chase where they agree to go to the end together. They also agree that Holly should go on the next reward challenge as a thank you gesture for her sacrifice after the last challenge.
And speaking of challenges, cue Dimples with a three part challenge. Survivors must first slime their way through a mud pit to retrieve a bag of balls hidden in a pile of hay. They then bounce their ball off a shield and into a basket. The first four Survivors to get all their balls into the basket move on. Chase, Jane, Benry and Holly are the lucky ones. These three must now use a long stick to retrieve an overhead key. The key opens a chest containing four sandbags. They must then toss the sandbags onto the top of a barrel. Chase and Benry win this one and move on to the final. Here they use a paddle to dig up three rope rings buried in the sand. They must then be the first to throw these rings onto hooks on a board. Chase comes out the winner and wins a trip to a resort for a shower, a massage and a meal. Of course, he isn't going alone. He can take two people with him. He takes Holly because of her sacrifice at the last challenge. Several pairs of puppy-dog eyes are on him as he decides who his second pick will be. Each Survivor is willing Chase to pick him. Sash believes it should be him based on his earlier conversation with Chase. Benry is also hopeful. Dan? Well even Dan must realize he hasn't done anything to deserve a reward in 31 days. Of course, Chase being Chase, he picks none of these. Instead he sticks with his alliance and picks Jane. It is only later, while the winning trio are enjoying their reward, that Chase slaps himself in the forehead and realizes what he has done. A snubbed Sash has been left behind to connive with the other alliance. Ooops! Wisely deciding there is nothing he can do about it now, Chase opts to enjoy the reward and do damage control the next day.
Of course, back at camp, Sash is, indeed. conniving with Benry, Dan and Fabio. Dan and Benry don't really trust Sash but feel they have no choice. Fabio has a couple of moments of insight but they melt away as fast as ice cream on a hot day. Since they are missing out on the reward, they decide to kill and eat the chicken (recently named Kelly-Nay). Apparently the chicken missed a day of egg laying. Wow. Tough crowd.
When Jane and the others return to camp Jane is heartbroken about the chicken. She sets up a little shrine and sheds a few tears over her avian friend. But you can only take so long to mourn or the game will move on without you. Holly, Chase and Jane have a quick meeting where they decide they have to convince Sash that he can trust them again. A lot of back and forth stuff happens but the constants are that no one really trusts Sash and no one believes they can beat Jane in the final three.
For the Immunity Challenge, Survivors are attached to a rope wound around a hitching post. They must unwrap enough of the rope to be able to reach a bag of coins. The first three to reach their bags move on to the next level where they must complete a puzzle from stacks of coins. Benry is completely stumped by the puzzle. Fabio has the sense to copy Sash's work (one gets the sense he probably made it through school doing this). But Sash is the ultimate winner. So Sash is on top of the world. He has an immunity idol, he has just won a second one and he is an unrecognized physical threat. He has, he tells us, been sandbagging the challenges.
Day 32 is spent in strategizing. There is a plot afoot to get rid of Fabio while telling him that Holly is the one to go. But Fabio feels he can trust Sash. "I'm just going to sit back and be cool. We'll see man!". Benry is also on the hit list. Meanwhile, Sash is working the crowd like a politician at a church picnic. But when the votes are counted it's Benry who is getting polished up for jury duty. With Benry goes our own Lorelee. If I am not mistaken Lorelee was Benry in both pools that she participates in. I think that deserves a moment of silence. But if we mourn too long the game will move on without us. Until next week...

Survivors Nicaragua - December 1/10
After a week of "never before seen footage" resulting from the US Thanksgiving we rejoin our Survivors on night 27. Brenda has just been sent home, no doubt wondering what the hell happened to that idol that Sash was supposed to use to save her. Brenda's departure has caused a lot of uncertainty in camp, especially for Purple Kelly** who suddenly feels left out of the loop. NaOnka is angry (there's a surprise) because Brenda threw her under the bus at Tribal Council. Holly takes her aside to tell her not to panic, that Brenda's chatter won't affect her relationships in camp. Chase is circulating, making sure that his alliance with NaOnka, Holly and Jane is still intact.
The survivors get through a rainy night to find a flood in their front yard. The continuing rain is taking NaOnka and Kelly to the edge. Kelly is cold and NaOnka's joints hurt. Wah. Fabio, not the brightest light in the harbour, at least has a good attitude. He says he just finds his mental happy place when things get tough. For his part, Benry hopes the two girls go home. Chase, always the most empathetic of the men, encourages NaOnka to stay but she says her heart is no longer in the game. She gives Chase her immunity idol. Chase might be too nice for his own good, but he does tell us privately that he isn't giving the idol back even if NaOnka changes her mind and decides to stay.
Now that NaOnka and Kelly may be leaving, alliances must be checked and re-jigged. Jane feels that Sash will fill in the gap left by NaOnka in her alliance with Chase and Holly. But Sash tells us that he doesn't trust the group.
Day 28 also brings a reward challenge. As the tribe gathers for the challenge, NaOnka and Kelly both announce that this will be their last day. Dimples can hardly believe his ears. Why would anyone not want to look at him for another 11 days (my words, not Jeff's). A school-yard pick (which still makes me feel a little queasy all these many years later) divides the Survivors into a blue team (Holly, NaOnka, Chase and Benry) and a yellow team (Kelly, Jane, Sash and Fabio). Dan is not selected by either team (go figure) and elects to let his fate go with the blue team. The teams are tethered together and are introduced to Gulliver, an 8 foot stuffed dummy. They must haul Gulliver through a series of obstacles. It is an extremely close race and Dimples has never been so "into" a challenge, yelling at both teams to work harder. Ultimately, the blue team wins reward - a trip to the Survivor Cinema. There they will watch the unreleased movie Gulliver's Travels starring Jack Black while eating popcorn, hotdogs and candy. There is a twist though. If any member of the winning team is willing to give up their trip to the cinema, they can win rice, a tarp and a rope for the entire tribe. Now considering NaOnka is planning on leaving tonight anyway, there is a collective glance in her direction. But NaOnka just smiles with visions of popcorn kernels dancing in her eyes. It is Holly who steps forward, saying she can eat hot dogs when she gets home. While Holly is volunteering, Benry is muttering at NaOnka to do the right thing and take Holly's place. More smiles. She doesn't move. So NaOnka, Dan, Chase and Benry head off to a grass hut where they find popcorn popping and weinies roasting. Jack Black is a hit and by the end of the evening NaOnka is thinking that maybe, just maybe she should stick around.
Back at camp Holly is a hero for her selfless act. She takes Kelly aside and tries to persuade her to stay. She tells her to suck it up and be tough inside. While she wavers a little, Kelly is still pretty sure she wants to leave.
At tribal council a visibly angry (and wet and hatless)Dimples hosts a Tribal Council in the pouring rain. He asks NaOnka if she still wants to leave. She does. He asks Kelly if she still wants to leave. She does. While Survivors have quit before, I don't recall Jeff Probst being quite so...well..mean...before. He agrees to snuff their torches but wants them left in Tribal Council to remind them each time they return with the jury, that they quit. The three members of the jury are livid. THEY wanted desperately to stay but these two are walking away. But it is so, and with NaOnka goes her alter ego Marie, and with Kelly goes Jan from the pool. Goodbye ladies. I know you would never have quit like these two. Selina voted for Kelly as the overall winner so no buff for Selina.
Until next week,
