We rejoin our intrepid Survivors after Tribal Council. They have just watched Kelly B. leave and Marty is ticked with Jane for her comments at Tribal Council and because he has figured out that she voted for him. Jane is next, he tells us, almost as if he might actually have some say in who is going next. The next morning he talks to Jane and tells her that he has never lied to her and never voted for her. But when he suggests to Jane that her vote may have been for him at Tribal Council, Jane just giggles, pats him on the back and walks away. Jill admits that she and Marty are scrambling to stay in the game.
Dimples brings them together for a reward challenge. A member of the opposing tribe must stand on a platform in the water and act as the defender. The opposing tribe takes turns running off the end of a platform and, while in the air, throwing a ball past the defender and into a net. The first tribe to get five goals wins reward - a trip to a local farm where they will ride horses, milk cows and have a Nicaraguan breakfast of tortillas, cheese, fruit and milk. The most exciting part of the challenge is when Fabio holds up the game so that he can pee in the pond, much to everyone's dismay, especially Dimples. Even having so eased his burden, Fabio can't keep out the final goal that sends Espada to victory.
Espada heads off to ride horses and enjoy a hearty breakfast while LaFlor goes back to camp. The next morning Jane is fishing while the others sleep. "Let them sleep", she says, "as long as we continue to win challenges". As for the younger tribe members, Sash speaks for all of them when he says that he is fine with being watered and fed by the hard-working older tribe members. For him, he tells us, "its not how hard you work its how loyal you are to me". Of course there should be some reward for hard work, and when Jane catches a whole basket of fish, she heads off to the jungle to cook one all for herself.
Day 18 brings an immunity challenge. The individual immunities are put aside and they are back to tribal immunity. The challenge involves two tribe members rolling cannonballs of varying sizes down a metal trough, with the goal of breaking one of several ceramic boards on the ground below. The rest of the tribe are in charge of moving the trough into an appropriate bomb-dropping position using ropes. Alina and Benry are the droppers for Espada and are a calm smart team. They easily beat LaFlor who can't seem to get their angles and trajectories quite right.
LaFlor must again go to Tribal Council. Jill figures she will be the one to go home since Marty has the idol. As the strategizing begins a plan develops to give three votes to Marty and two to Jill in order to get Marty to play the idol. There would then be a tie between Jill and whomever Jill and Marty vote for. Jill would be eliminated in the resulting vote-off. Brenda then suggests that they ask Marty to give them the idol in return for a promise not to vote him off (after which they would promptly vote him off!). Sash approaches Marty with the idea and Marty gives him the idol**. At Tribal Council Marty tells an incredulous Dimples that he gave the idol to Sash. But somehow Marty has dodged a bullet because when the votes are counted Marty and Jane each have two and Jill has three. And so my Jill is going home to her Emergency Room duties and I will soon have to kiss this envelope of money goodbye. Grace and Lynn both voted for Jill to win the million -nuh uh!
And so, until next week when Lynn will be doing the honours....
Outsmart, Outplay Outlast
Pat (aka Jill bye bye Behm)
** Editors note: What is it about the hidden immunity idol...does it have some sort of radioactive emission that kills brain cells in the person carrying it!?

Survivor Nicaragua - October 20/10
Its Day 15 in Survivorland. At Espada, Dan is telling holly he may pack it in. Holly encourages him not to quit and tells us that "when you start something you suck it up and finish". This would be the same Holly who wanted to quit a couple of episodes ago? Yve approaches Holly and wants to know why she wasn't told that Tyrone was going to be sent home. Holly tells her that everyone thought she was in an alliance with Tyrone. Not so, says Yve.
At LaFlor Marty and Jill are experiencing a generation gap wide enough to drive a Hummer through. While they are up early doing dishes and cleaning the camp, the young LaFlorides sleep until noon. Jill comments that its just like home - mom cooks and cleans while the teen agers sleep. But apparently Brenda is awake long enough to scheme. Brenda is working the young members of the tribe to give 3 votes to Marty and 3 votes to Jill. That will potentially flush out Marty's idol and send one or the other home.
At the challenge we learn that they will be playing for individual rather than tribe immunity. Each tribe is going to Tribal Council to vote someone off, but the upcoming challenge will provide one person from each tribe with immunity. Each tribe first competes separately. They are given a paddle and a patch of sand. They must dig up each of three rope rings using their paddle, then use the paddle to flip the ring into a basket tied on their back. The first tribe member to retrieve three rings will win immunity and will move on to the next round. Holly wins for Espada and Jill wins for LaFlor (thereby foiling Brenda's carefully laid plan for splitting the votes). Holly and Jill next compete in a game of ring toss, the winner of which wins a chicken and beef kabob feast for their entire tribe. Jill wins this round and LaFlor learns that they will be the first to go to Tribal Council to vote one of their own off. They will then get to sit in on Espada's Tribal Council while eating their feast.
Back at camp, Brenda retools her strategy. Now the plan calls for Marty to get three votes, and Kelly B. to get three votes but Kelly B. is to be told that Jane is the one getting the three votes (whew). Brenda's only concern is Fabio (Jud) who she insists, is clueless. Sure enough, the next shot we see is of Marty convincing Fabio that he is a chess master (he isn't) and telling him about a famous Argentinian chess master (who was actually a famous tennis player). Marty invites Fabio to join him in "the greatest move in Survivor history. Best of all, he assures Fabio that he won't even have to think. Fabio believes Marty and later, when Chase tells him he should vote for Marty, the poor lad looks like his head might explode. Meanwhile Jane is "thick as peanut butter" with the young members of the tribe and is more than happy to get rid of Marty and Jill, who never made an effort to pull her into their alliance. Marty believes the vote will be for Jane but wonders why there is so much chit chat if its a done deal. He wonders whether he should play his idol, but is pretty confident Jane is the target. At Tribal Council Brenda calls Marty out and tells Dimples that Marty was trying to get Jane voted out. Marty mouths to Jill and Jane that they should vote for Brenda, and still opts not to play the idol. When the votes are tallied it is a tie between Marty and Kelly. There is a second vote and Kelly B. is sent home in a blindside. With Kelly goes Mitzi from our pool.
LaFlor now chows down on their kebobs while they watch Espada's Tribal Council. Dan has stated that he doesn't know why he is there. He hates the weather and the food and doesn't need the money. The tribe seems undecided about whether to get rid of Dan and his bad knees, or Yve who is playing the game more seriously. At Tribal Council Dan denies that he wants to go home and Yve pleads her case a little too vehemently. When the votes are cast Yve is the Espada member going home, taking our Lisa with her. Jack voted for Yve to win the million so he is waving goodbye to his Survivor buff.
There are now 13 Survivors left. Who will be next? Will it be you? Will it be me? (It could very well be me!!).

Survivor Nicaragua - October 13/10
It is the night of Tribal Council and Espada has just returned to camp. Holly is shocked that Jimmy T. has been voted out. She also knows she is on the outs with her tribe. Meanwhile, Marty believes he is in complete control of the tribe.Holly will, indeed, be the next to go. Marty tells Danny that he can see two tribal councils into the future with total certainty. His plan can only be disrupted by some cataclysmic event. You gotta know that this is going to end badly when the cameramen start focusing on talk like that.
At Camp LaFlor, NaOnka says she is proud of her young tribe. She has cleaned off her shoes and fixed her hair on the theory that "if you look good and feel good you do good." Apparently looking good doesn't get you good grammar though!
Imagine the surprise on the faces of all these intensely confident people when they arrive at the challenge to have Dimples tell them to drop their buffs. Old vs Young is done. The Medallion of Power is done. Espada and LaFlor live on but with different members. Brenda and Holly draw coloured stones and so get to select the teams. When its all done, LaFlor (in yellow) consists of Marty, Brenda, Jud, Jill, Jane, Sash, Kelly B. and Kelly Purple. Espada (in blue) is comprised of NaOnka, Danny, Holly, Chase Alina, Tyrone, Benry and Yve.
The challenge is a reward challenge, the prize being two live chickens and a rooster. The game involves some tribe members tossing balls up to the top of a slanted board. From there they roll down, bouncing and ricocheting off wooden blocks (Bob Barker used to play a game like this, not that I am old enough to remember it). Tribe members stand in pairs at the bottom and try to catch the ball as it comes down. A dropped ball is a point for the other Tribe. Espada wins and happily totes their chickens back to camp. Once there, Tyrone comments that he will miss his old tribe but he is thoroughly enjoying the younger bodies in their scanty clothes. Tyrone also decides to fill the newcomers in on the camp rules. Keep it clean, put it back, let someone know if you are using it. Whaaaaat? say the youngsters. We didn't have rules back where we come from! Holly is delighted with her new situation and plays the cool old person role (not very well) for "the kids". In a turn of events totally unforseen by NaOnka just a few hours ago, she now finds herself in an improbably alliance with Alina and Holly.
At the yellow camp the LaFlorines are also getting to know one another. There is talk of rules at this camp as well(everyone pull their weight, share the work etc). Again the response by the young tribe members shows a major generation gap. We're pretty laid back, says Brenda. Jane likes the more relaxed approach of the younger tribe members. She is sick of rules. She tells some of the younger ones that they should consider getting rid of Marty and Jill as they are "as tight as ticks". To prove he is a team player, Marty volunteers to the group that he has an idol. Brenda is not impressed, telling us that Marty is already setting himself up to be king and that revealing that he had the idol was the stupidest thing he could have done.
The night brings rain. Lots and lots of rain. Espada suffers the most because they have a poor shelter. NaOnka breaks down and her former rival Alina is left to comfort her. NaOnka thinks she might be ready to go home. Alina tells her to stay but privately tells us that NaOnka is like a high school girl who is constantly having her period. Chase takes over comforting NaOnka with a story about the day his dad died. Chase and NaOnka are both crying during the story so I didn't really get the whole thing but it involved a rainbow and a pick-up truck. If it didn't cheer NaOnka up it could easily be material for a country song.
For the Immunity Challenge, three Survivors from each tribe are strapped onto giant water wheels which are then spun by their tribe-mates. For brief periods, each of the water wheel people are under water. During this period they must fill their mouths with water and, at the appropriate time, spit it into a bowl at the top of the wheel. When they have spit enough water into the container a ball is released. Another team member must then use the ball to break 5 ceramic tiles. LaFlor wins this challenge. Espada returns to camp hungry. Several of them want to kill a chicken and eat it but Tyrone is against the idea on the grounds that it will reduce their egg supply. May I just point out here that there was a rooster in that pen. Roosters don't lay eggs, nor will they be around long enough to raise a bunch of baby chickens. Eat the damned rooster! But in the end both Tyrone and I are over ruled. Chase kills one of the hens and the tribe feasts on boiled chicken. Tyrone sits off to the side, apparently a little pouty that no one listened to him. But when the chicken is served Tyrone takes his share and then some. The target on Tyrone's back has just grown by several inches. Alina tells us that she, Chase Holly and Benry are firmly in control of the tribe. Benry is uncertain whether the vote should go to the weepy NaOnka or to the annoying Tyrone. At Tribal Council Dimples asks NaOnka what was the hardest thing she did prior to Survivor. She responds that getting divorced at 26 was the hardest thing but that she has more support here. Ouch, was that a ripple of pity that just passed through my body. No. Wait. That was amazement because I wouldn't have put NaOnka much past 14.
When Dimples tallies the vote it is Tyrone who is heading home in a blindside. Not a vote for team strength, but maybe for team unity. With Tyrone goes Donna from the pool. Georgia and Mitzi both picked Tyrone to be the winner so they can kiss their Survivor buffs goodbye for this season.

Survivor Nicaragua - October 6/10
It's night 8. Seventeen survivors remain. We are visiting camp Espada after tribal council and it is raining. Hard. Espada members, soaked, cold and grumpy sit around their campfire. What they really want is just to quietly wallow in their own misery but Jimmy T. sings, bops around camp, talks, hugs people and is generally annoying. Marty sums it up when he says that Jimmy likes to hear the sound of his own voice 24/7 and that all he needs is enough rope and he will hang himself. The next morning the Esparuvians wake up to find that their beach is missing. The rains have flooded the beach leaving muddy water and debris. Jimmy T. decides to go fishing and gives the net a few tosses but Marty only shakes his head in amusement. Later Marty nominates Tyrone as leader, suggesting they need one voice during the challenges. Marty knows this will drive Jimmy T. wild and it does. He tells the group he doesn't want to be leader while rambling on about how he wants "a shot" in the challenges.
At Camp LaFlor NaOnka is surprised to see it has rained. Apparently she sleeps well when her gums aren't flapping. She and Brenda set out to follow their clue to the immunity idol. It is Brenda who figures out that the final part of the clue refers to tree mail. With her input they find the idol. NaOnka, of course, claims the idol since she believes she was ultimately the one who solved the clue. Huh? Alina and Kelly B. have noticed NaOnka and Brenda searching a particular area so they wander over to have a look too. NaOnka follows them to "give them a scare". She asks them what they are looking for then proceeds to berate Kelly B. for no apparent reason. This one really might be crazy.
Tree mail arrives promising warmth and comfort. Included in the box are blindfolds. The clever oldsters know that someone is going to direct them, so they practise with the blindfolds and have Tyrone guide them verbally. Sure enough, they learn that the challenge involves tribe members being handcuffed together in pairs. One person guides the various pairs to retrieve 10 items scattered in an open area. The first tribe to retrieve the 10 items, then get some keys and finally get a chest, will win reward and immunity. The LaFlorides use their Medallion of Power and so start off with two of their 10 items already on home base. This one is never really a contest. In spite of their rehearsals the Espadaruvians suck. LaFlor walks away with the challenge. They have a choice of a number of reward packages so they chose fishing gear, a tarp and cooking supplies. As they get their swag back to camp, Chase is looking through the tackle box when he notices a rolled up clue. He hides it and later shows the clue to Brenda. He wants her to help him find the idol. Eventually Brenda is guilted into telling Chase that NaOnka already has the idol.
The Espada tribe are back at their camp as well. Jimmy T. is going on and on and on about how all he wants is a shot in one of the challenges. Everyone is polite, but no one is willing to let Jimmy T. control anything. As Jimmy T. and Jill are picking sea urchins for dinner Marty picks up a couple of small ones and eats them. Jimmy T. tells him he should add them to the community cook pot and accuses Marty of not being a team player. An angry Marty tells Jill that he wants Jimmy T. gone. Jill is leaning more to Dan, as is Tyrone. But when the votes are counted at Tribal Council it is the annoying Jimmy T. who is heading home. Much less annoying, but equally gone, is our own Grace from the pool. Sixteen hardy souls are left. Who will be the next to go?
